prepare your home for sale

If you are thinking about listing your home in 2017, there are things you can do now to prepare your home for sale. Organizing and cleaning now can make the process of listing and showing your home much easier when you are ready to take that leap.

Clear out

Few things are as big a turn-off for buyers as overcrowded rooms and stacks of junk or boxes. The less junk you have lying around, the more spacious each room will be. When you first start thinking about selling your home, try to tackle a room per week. Clear out things you don't need.

Ideally, you will sell, donate or toss these items, but you can rent a storage space as a last resort. Don't forget to go through garages and storage closets as you are working on clearing out your home. Not only will it make selling your home easier, but it will make packing and moving easier as well.

Tidy up

Once you have eliminated items you no longer need or want, keep each room as neat and organized as possible. File stacks of papers and tuck odds and ends into storage baskets or ottomans to keep each room feeling open and airy.

When you are ready to list, it's also helpful to box up collectibles and knick-knacks. Leave out just a few accessory items that add to the room's homey feeling, but pack away items that are valuable, sentimental or personal.

Deep clean

A dirty space can leave an impression that a home has not been maintained well. You might see a slightly dingy rug, but your buyer sees question marks about what else could be lurking beneath it. It pays to scrub ovens and stoves, to steam clean carpets and to leave windows sparkling and bright. When your prospective buyer enters your home, it should feel fresh, bright and ready for them to make it their own.
